Sorry but I see lots of conflicting info here. I have an with latest s/w. Is it possible to unlock only and not jailbreak?
 
To unlock on a carrier that does not allow unlocking, you must jailbreak. It has always been this way and will most likely always be this way.

Ah, I had it backward. What is the best way to jailbreak using 4.2.1 and firmware 3.10.01?

The short answer is, jailbreak for 4.2.1 is tethered only, via redsn0w, which means that everytime you reboot your phone for whatever reason, you will need a computer with redsn0w on it to boot it back up.

As for an unlock, there is none currently for that Baseband.
