I have an opportunity to buy an unlocked AT&T phone with no contract and want to hook it backup with At&T my question is AT&T going to require any kind of lengthy contract to do this or can I just sign up and get a month to month voice and data plan. I have an existing Blackberry Curve contract that ends this month.

If you are buying it from AT&T, and you are paying a subsidized price, they will require a two year contract.

However, if you are paying a non-subsidized price, or you are buying from a private individual, then you'll have no contract to commit to.

Also, as long as you are not signing a commitment, if you don't want a data plan, you can request that they turn it off. If you are signing a commitment though, you will also have to commit to a data plan for the term of the contract.
