Will an unlocked iPhone 4S bought from an Apple store in the US work in Malaysia?

And if so, how? Just insert one of the Malaysian carriers' SIM cards? Will it be able to use data there?

Yes it will work there, and as long as you have a data plan it should be able to use data.

All of the carriers here offer iPhone data plans. You can get good coverage, unlimited data plans cheap, either in prepaid or postpaid accounts.

Depending on where you are going to be Digi and Maxis are the two leading carriers.
