It's not insane, it's... oh nevermind :)

It's the pricing that Apple is forced to charge so they can stay in business.

Yeah, it costs like $100 to make, if that, but okay.

Is this for real? Apple raising the unlocked iPhone price from $649? I don't think many people are going to pay $900 (after taxes) for a phone if this is true.

I checked my dads line which is not eligible for a subsidy and it still lists the standard $649/$749/$849 for the iPhone 5.

The unlocked versions have so far always cost the same as the unsubsidized phone.

So, an iPhone only costs $100 to make? You got a source on that?

The 16Gb 4s was $188 US to produce when it was released.

Since apple makes everything smaller, I would imagine the price to build their new phone is smaller as well. Maybe more like $150 US

Yeah, I think the link in the OP is just for the UK.

Wrong, it lists UK AND US prices

"The U.S. unlocked iPhone 5 will be released on Sept. 21 with pre-orders beginning Sept. 14. The 16GB model will retail for $849, 32GB for $949, and the price for the 64GB model has not yet been released yet"

Uh, I think this author just took the unlocked UK prices and converted to USD.

529 british pounds is about $852 USD.

Thanks for injecting sanity. I see the same info for my line which opened in April.

This is likely the prices for someone on a carrier that is NOt eligible for an upgrade, NOT the unlocked price

But aren't those still subsidized a bit?

Just like to say I'd be more than happy for this to be wrong, as I plan to get the unlocked version, however, it seems accurate, unfortunately

Why is the price so high?

Cause they can.

(by the way, it would help for folks to clarify US vs UK, etc... since so many jump to conclusions)

The article does specify. Perhaps you should have read it before YOU jumped to conclusions.

Canada's Apple store has the 16GB Unlocked listed now at $699, it will likely be $649 in the US.

The article says "The U.S. unlocked iPhone 5 will be released on Sept. 21 with pre-orders beginning Sept. 14". Apple hasn't made any announcements regarding unlocked phones so I don't think they know what they're talking about.

lol considering the cost breakdown for any iphone is always a guess and never includes the millions of dollars in R&D, retooling of all facilities, shipping, certification with all the different government entities around the world.

and the article you read is clearly incorrect. At least in the US the price is not changing for an unsubsidized iPhone. As posted by quagmire $649 for a 16gb

and since when is christianpost.com a reliable source for tech news? They dont even provide a source for where they got that information
