Unlocked iPhone sourced from UK work with EU sims?

Probably a stupid question but I realised I wasn't sure of the answer! If I had an unlocked iPhone from the UK I can put in a SIM from a local phone company and it will work fine? (I understand the US has different specs but not sure of UK versus continental Europe?)

I am getting fed up with Android and as my UK phone is a 3GS...........
 
my last iphone was an unlocked 4s that came from the UK, it worked perfectly fine with my Greek carrier
