unlocked iphone, which plan?

hey guys,

I'm currently thinking about buying the iPhone unlocked directly from apple. the reason for that is that i will be abroad in a few month and want to go to a local carrier. I just wondered, which plan to get?

I have realized, that t-mobile are most of the time the cheapest, but apparently t-mobile doesn't work in my area.
Are there any other cheap plans i could use? virgin mobile or something alike?

i also found out, that att has data-only plans for iPad. would those work on an iPhone? i normally do all my calls via Skype anyway.

There are threads on using AT&T GoPhone prepaid SIMs with unlocked iPhones, apparently you buy a voice SIM and then add data to it. Search "gophone iphone" and I'm sure you'll find plenty of info.

try straight talk also, they have ATT backbone as their network i believe ...
