I'd like to clarify what the title indicates.

You can go online and find the iPhone 4 unlocked anywhere between $800-$1000. They're selling the iPhone 3GS abroad for $300 with a 2 year $50 monthly contract. But, you can go to the Apple Store and buy the latest iPhone for $600, supposedly. How can this be true?

If true, and say I do buy this $600 iPhone without a contract, is it actually unlocked? Can I take it abroad and exchange SIM's to use at my pleasure with whichever service? No cracking software required?

You can buy a $600 iPhone which has no contract, however, it is still locked to AT&T. If you want a truly unlocked iPhone you'll have to import it from one of the numerous countries which sell them unlocked.

This is what I thought. Thanks.

Out of curiosity, how much does an unlocked iPhone in the UK cost?

£500 for a 16gb or £600 for a 32gb. Around $775 and $925 respectively.

You can get unlocked phones from canada too...they are slightly expensive than the US models but you can use them with any sim card in the world.

What if a Canadian buys a non-subsidized iPhone 4 at a USA Apple store for use in Canada? Will Apple unlock that phone at purchase or can the Canadian cell service provider have Apple unlock it as if it was sold in Canada?

No, it will only work with AT&T sims.
Nobody unlocks US iPhones unless you try to jb it and unlock it yourself.
