I have an unlocked phone in Canada and I'm wondering if I will incur the same roaming charges in the U.S. as I would if my phone was locked.

If so, how can avoid them? I've heard that purchasing a SIM card from a U.S. provider is one way, but doesn't that change your phone number?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Locked or unlocked doesn't really affect roaming with the SIM/provider you have--it depends on what your provider offers as far as service/coverage in U.S. If you are unlocked then you can get another SIM from a different provider and use that, but, yes, that would give you a different number as well.
