So when you travel.... How do you get a sim for where you are going? Do you buy it there? Is there an easy way to use service wherever you go?

Yes,buy it on arrival. Never had an issue in any country. Several countries offer them as soon as you exit Customs. For a few years ,I was buying a cheap phone on arrival then I just got AT&T to unlock mine and I use it everywhere.
