Unlocked phone can still be used?

Just a quick question that I can't seem to find an answer to. If I unlock my iPhone 4 through ATT, will it still function as normal until I activate my new phone coming this week? Or once it is unlocked does it not connect to the network anymore?

Sorry for the stupid question, I just want to make sure I'm not rendering my current phone inoperable on my current plan by doing this before I get my new phone.

Yes, your iphone 4 should still work fine.

Why would the phone not work if you unlock it?
All the unlock does is allows the phone to be used on any gsm carrier in the world.
It doesn't lock it out of your current carrier. Everything will still work fine with any AT&T sim of course.

Thanks. Just wanted to make sure before I did it.

I asked because all the explanations say "unlock so you can use on another carrier." But I don't want to use it on another carrier (at least for the time being). I want to continue to use it on ATT.
