I bought a 4S 5.1 with good ESN. But, I am not in the USA.
I was thinking of giving them a call over skype and see if they could unlock it, but I'm not actually on their plan.

Would I be better off getting a Gevey Ultra S?
If so, would I need a CDMA one or GSM one? Since it's a Verizon iPhone.
The CDMA gevey on applenberry doesn't say it supports 5.1 though.

Also, the carrier in my country will be GSM.

To have a Verizon iPhone 4S unlocked, you need to have service with them for 6 months and have paid your bill on time.

Just having a Verizon 4S with good ESN is not enough? They will ask for my account details then I presume?

Does anybody know if I will need a CDMA gevey or a GSM gevey then?

AFAIK, Verizon/Sprint unlocks their iphone for international roaming purpose only. If this is what you mean.

If that wasnt the purpose, it wont work unless you have the account active and you have the international roaming set up.

Only the unlocked iphone bought from the apple store or apple.com will work on any gsm network that is supported.

This is false.

Once Verizon unlocks your phone, it is unlocked permanently, regardless of whether it remains active on a Verizon line.

The only restriction is on US MNC/MCCs, so you wouldn't be able to use it with AT&T or T-Mobile SIM cards.

Has anyone with an att account ever tried to call in with a verizon iphone 4s IMEI # to see if they can unlock it? :D

Well, that's what 3 Verizon reps told me yesterday. One over the phone and two in the store. Plus I had heard it before but was just verifying it.
Verizon store reps are salespeople, not customer service people; they had no idea what they were talking about. Regular VZW phone reps wouldn't know any more about this either. Only VZW Global Support reps are knowledgeable on this subject.

In other words, the reps who said 6 months are wrong. I'm right.

EDIT: Just for good measure, here is written documentation from a VZW employee that it is 60 days, not 6 months: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/365596#461632

You need to be a customer in good standing for over 2 months etc...

That's not gonna happen.
AT&T checks the IMEI to make sure its on their database and locked to their network.
If not they cannot unlock another carriers device.

Now I have unlocked my Verizon iPhone 4S, but the only issue that it only works for GSM carriers outside USA. I unlocked it from

MyIMEIunlock. com

so any one can let me know how to make it work with AT&T

thnaks

How about jailbreak?

The verizon iphone 4S can only be unlocked for outside the US.
It wont work with any US GSM sims. If your 4S is on 5.1.1 or below you can use a gevey sim to unlock it for US use. If its on 6.0 then gevey wont be able to unlock it either and there's nothing you can do to use it with any GSM sim in the US. Only outside the country it will work.
Its not the same as the iphone 5.

I just wanted to report that I just went through the unlock process through Verizon. A quick call, 15 minutes later and the request has been sent to Apple to unlock it for free.
They told me I can't unlock another one for 10 months, but that the phone will be unlocked permanently.
Thanks for the info!!! I was about to shell out some cash to do the same thing.

Use GPP SIM

It works great on my iPhone 4s - I bought myself out of my Sprint contract and now use Net10 (AT&T MVNO). No jailbreak, everything works great.
