Unlocking Advice???

I'm trying to get my 1st Gen unlocked to work on T-Moblie. In doing basic internet searches, I come up with pay sites and jailbreaking info.

There must be some guide somewhere that can tell me how to unlock. Is there a site that has instructions? Is it easy or am I over my head? Are the pay sites worth $19.99 to unlock the thing?
