I really wanted to keep my iPhone 4 as original as possible so I've never jailbreaked it, but I need to travel oversea soon and need it unlocked. It there any way to unlock my AT&T iPhone4 (iOS 4.1) without jailbreaking? I know there's unlocking via IMEI, but that looks like only good for the carriers in Europe.

If you updated to 4.1 without using tiny Umbrella, them your baseband was update to 02.x and that is not unlockable at the moment. Sorry

If (and only if) you keep your old baseband 01.59.xx by using TU while updating to 4.1 (which I doubt since you said you never jailbroken and want to keep the phone as "original" as possible) them you could have use an application call ultrasn0w to unlock that baseband

I'm soon going away on a 6 week trip to Japan, Thailand and Sweden and would like to unlock so that I can use local SIM cards. I have an iPhone 4 on 4.1. What's the procedure? I assume then I would have to downgrade to 4.01, but how do I do that?

Also, if anyone knows which carriers in Japan and Thailand works with iPhone 4, that would be great.

What Modem Firmware are you at? If it's more current than 01.59.00 you will not be able to unlock and there's no way to downgrade the modem firmware.

Settings----General----About.

I'm on 02.10.04. So nothing can be done then? If not, based on previous releases, when can we expect a new jailbreak that will work with 4.1?

Correct, nothing can be done and you are mixing terms.

There already is a jb for 4.1, that's not your problem.

There's no unlock for the modem firmware you're at and no one on MR knows when, or if, there will be one.

Another thread talked about the newly released greenpois0n and limera1n which should jailbreak 4.1. Are you saying unlocking still won't work with my modem firmware 02.10.04?

To unlock a phone you need to do 2 things, in order;

1. jailbreak it
2. unlock it.

There's no unlock for the modem firmware level you are at and there's no way to downgrade modem firmware.

Thank you Mike for that info. I'll just have to bite the bullet and pay AT&T's exuberant roaming fees then.

I'm thinking about doing that too. But let's say you are in Japan, if someone wants to call you from Japan they will need to pay for long distance plus at the same time you are paying for roaming.

I'm willing to just pay the roaming fee if AT&T provides me a local number for whichever country I'm roaming in.

A friend of mine is in the same situation as you are. He went to CompUSA and picked up a cheap Motorola phone, unlocked and GSM/Quad band. He just needs it to make calls and once inawhile send a text. Its an option well worth considering.

We are leaving this weekend and i upgraded to 4.1 and preserved my BB.
I am all set, hope ultrasn0w works!!:D

This really sucks, the iPhone is a quad-band world phone and we can't make full usage of it right out of the box without these limitation.

I've already got a unlocked plain Nokia, probably gonna bring it there and use a prepaid sim. But it's just not the same without my iPhone 4. :(

Since we are on the subject...

I did some general browsing and came across an item in the works (i believe by geohot) called limesn0w that will unlock 02.10.04 bb. Is there any validity behind this, or is it fake?

Also keep in mind that the iPhone 4 uses a smaller sim, I am not sure what other phones or carriers oversees use.

Cutting the SIM is less of a hassle than trying to unlock a phone--especially when there is no software unlock available.
