Isn’t sleep mode supposed to unlock with a long hold of the crown? I just got my aw10 yesterday and am new to sleeping with my aw. I had an ultra before this and it was too bulky. With my ultra a long press unlocked in sleep mode. On the new 10 a short press of the crown unlocks the watch in sleep mode. I’m sure that’s going to cause me some unexpected happenings in my sleep. Is there a setting I am missing for the long press, and also what do others do for further protection from unwanted touches?

Thanks!

All series including Ultra are the same. Apple update the firmware to short press digital crown to exit sleep mode instead of long press in the past.

Oh ok thanks. This is the first I’d heard it was an across the board change in an update. Not sure why they’d make it easier to get into while asleep.

What is this "exit sleep mode"? I've never heard of it! The only way I know how to end sleep mode from the watch is to open control center and tap the sleep icon.

Not sure what you are talking about -- as far as I'm aware, sleep mode doesn't protect from unwanted touches. That's water lock. But water lock still requires a long press of the crown to get out of it.

That's the exact point. I DO NOT want my watch unlocking while I sleep. So I am wondering what measures people take to make sure no accidental phone calls or anything get placed in their sleep.

If you are worried, turn on water lock. Although, I've been sleeping with an Apple watch on my wrist for, I don't know, at least 5 years now, probably longer, and I've never had any problems with the watch doing anything accidentally while I was sleeping.

There is an option to have a special watch face ("sleep screen") for sleep focus (to reduce distractions). After it was introduced (watchOS 9 I think?) it was like water-lock - it required a long-press of the crown to clear it if the watch was still in sleep mode. As somebody who wakes up a few times most nights, I was well aware of this. restriction so I never used that watch face - it was too much a bother if I wanted to see something (e.g., any notifications that came in.)

Settings / Focus / Sleep, Options under "Customize Screens", the top option - "Sleep Screen"

But watchOS 11 changed it so that it just takes a simple press of the Digital Crown to go back to the watch face temporarily - so I am back to using this.

Ah, ok. Now that you mention it, yes, I remember that being introduced. I never used it since I don't find the regular watch faces distracting at night.

I think they know what they are doing, for me, this is a huge upgrade actually, because a short hold is much more easy to do and less time consuming than waiting 3 seconds for it to unlock and just instantly lock again when turning your wrist the wrong way.

And even if you unlock it by accident while asleep, I don’t think it will do much. It will probably lock again after 15 seconds or when covering the screen or turning your wrist.

It does actually protect from unwanted touches, just not from Tap to Wake.
You can tap it, wake it, nothing else unless you unlock by holding the crown.

My Ultra 2 is the same. I sleep with it every night and have had zero issues with accidental presses. Screen goes black usually until morning.

On a similar note, it’s too easy to stop or snooze an alarm on the watch. There are many times I’d cut it off in my groggy reluctance to awake on time. I’d prefer an option to disable to interaction with alarms, opting to move users to the phone.

I don't agree, needs to be simple ... maybe set a 2nd alarm?

How are you interacting with the alarm? I find that if I use the buttons instead of touching the screen, I can avoid unintentional interactions with the alarm. It's push crown to snooze, side button to stop.

Half asleep, press side button, back to deep sleep, wake up late.

I’ve instead switched to effective wake up methods.

Yes! I like the option to stop an alarm by covering the screen WHEN I AM AWAKE, not when I am barely conscious and majorly tired and annoyed by the noise on my wrist.

So you have to select a specific watch face for it to work? I thought that was just an option if you wanted to attach one. I just set it uo but didn’t select a watch face.

You are thinking of the option to assign one of the regular watch faces to a particular focus.

Separate from that, there is an option to switch the watch to a simplified sleep screen when in sleep focus.

Thanks. Do you have to do that to make the focus work or is it just an option? I want everything silenced and off. No sounds or displays lighting up while I’m sleeping.

I have a do not disturb focus for the same times as my sleep focus, did that way back when before I actually had a 2nd watch (which I when I started wearing AW for sleep tracking.
I do not recall how I setup my sleep focus at the time, but my screen is off, when I tap it it shows the time for a few seconds and then goes off again

It's an option. I personally don't use it. But if you want everything off while you're sleeping, you probably want to turn that simplified watch face on, as it's the least disruptive mode available.
