unlocking iPhone 4 (Verizon) for use in Japan?

My wife and I will be traveling to Japan at the end of summer to help with relief work ( www.facebook.com/lovebirdsapparel ur apparel fundraiser) and we would like to know what you guys think. Our friends said that we should unlock our iPhone 4 so we can use it over there. How do we go about doing this? Sorry for the totally n00b question, couldn't find another thread about the iP4V. Mahalo for you help!

you can use it but you will still be using Verizon wireless, but roaming on whatever carriers are there
