Unlocking iphone 4?

Hello all,

I need to buy an iphone 4 for my wife, needs it to be able to be used in China later on, in other words, I need it to be unlocked. I have not follow on the status of iphone unlock. I'v just heard only iphone with certain old baseband can be unlocked? If I buy a locked version of iphone 4 right now, is there a good chance that software unlocking method will be out soon?

The supposed 8GB iPhone 4 being released tomorrow should be somewhat affordable unlocked - around $400 or so.

Unlocked 8G iphone 4 is $550+tax on Canadian's apple website, there is really no point buying that as 16G iphone 4S is $650+tax

Correct. A new iPhone 4 sold now will not have the 01.59.00 baseband. Software unlock is not possible after that baseband.
