For the hell of it, I connected my stupidly high end stereo system directly to my 2011 Mac Mini via a 3.5mm to RCA cable and made some interesting discoveries.

Apple says the DAC chip in the mini outputs at 24/96. And that is what Audio Midi reports as well. However... HQPlayer can only output up to 20/96. I trust what HQPlayer is telling me much more than I trust the Audio Midi, which Apple can program to say whatever they want it to say.

So... My question is this: What audio hardware is inside this Mac mini, and can it be made to perform to the specs Apple says it can, or higher? Has anyone ever investigated this?

According to iFixit, the Audio Controller in the 2011 Mac mini is a Cirrus Logic 4206B Audio Controller, which according to Cirrus Logic IS capable of up to 192khz.
