Unpairing AppleWatch from phone I wiped?

I have an AppleWatch that was paired to my XS Max that I wiped because I'm trading it in. I now want to pair it to my new phone, though it is still paired to my old phone. Do I need to wipe the watch from the watch?

On the watch, go to Settings, General, Reset, Erase all contents and settings.
