Unplayed playlist help

i just got a new iPod nano and i have it so it updates all unplayed podcasts however when ever i listen to only like 5 seconds of a podcast then sync it,
it treats it like its been played. how do i change it so it doesnt change to played untill its been fully played through?

Unfortunately, as far as I know, this setting is not user-selectable. It counts as played the instant it starts. I agree that it can be a bit of a hassle. You can always go into iTunes and 'mark as unplayed' any podcasts that you'd like to keep on the nano.
