Unplugging magsafe ejects external hardrive

I have the 15" MacBook Pro 2011. I have an external 500GB hardrive connected via a firewire 800 to 400 cable (800 into MacBook, 400 into the drive). When I unplug the magsafe adapter the external drive is ejected without warning.

Is anyone aware of this problem and what can be causing it?
