I stumbled upon unRAID the other day. It seems pretty usefull. It seems to be more geared towards media centers but I would imagine you can put whatever u want on it. From what I read you can build an external storage unit using and old PC/MAC or build a new one and the OS just loads off a flash drive. It also states that you can use and drive, and drive size but up to 15 drives. I'm not too sure the compatibility to Mac OSX.

I was with my friend when I bought my HDDs and he suggested using that. He said he uses it with his WinTel box and it's great (for software only). He's degreed and holds several impressive networking certifications so I guess he'd know.

I've never seen nor used it myself. :)
