The greats folks at Unsanity have just released a new APE module that allows you "a haxie that completely customizes Mac OS X interface with custom themes and more". Apparently was not only designed by Unsanity but all the top dogs in the Mac theme(ing) community (Max, BBX, etc). But this theme(ing) solution is thought to be the safest yet, since it doesn't modify any system files, and the best since it allows the users to conifigure the entire look of MacOS X without affecting the choice of other users on the computer. It sure is worth checking out, even if you are or aren't much of a themer.

it looks great, but for poor college students like me who spend all their money on hardware and food, ok and the occational book, dvd, game...
seriously though, it's a little steep...then again i'm a free sourcer and i run kde in x11...
hmmm, so why i'm complaining i don't know...maybe i just want osx to be as open as possible :D
at any rate, unsanity usually does good stuff so it will be interesting to see if it really is the next kalidescope

Looks good, but can we take it further?

Even though I haven't really played around with at theme editor much, I'm always disapointed at the lack of innovation and development of the software.

What I'd like to see is a theme editor that:
1) Has theme 'files' so you can share and modify to personal tastes. (From looking at the link, this looks like this is one of the benefits to the program)

2) Have sytem sounds included in theme. This was something I always liked to play with in the System 8 days, and it's becoming more prevalent with the system sounds found in Panther.

3) Set the theme up to display only certain backgrounds or screensavers (to match/complement the theme)

4) Have the ability to ramdomly change themes... Maybe this could be done in the "shut down" phase of your computer, where the program chooses another theme for the next time you boot up.
Also it be nice to set "holiday theme" periods where your halloween, Christmas, Valentines, etc. themes override (or limit) the random selection of themes for the time period(s) you choose.

Does something like this exist, or should I quit complaining and pick up a developers tool kit? :)

I've been waiting on a theme app that I trust... about time.

I spend so much time mocking up webpages and then just trashing them and never doing anything with the hours I spent coding actionscripts.. maybe I'll get into themebuilding...

Is themebuilder the app to use or is there a better alternative?

hmmmm...a theme switcher, v1, released today. Thanks but no thanks, I'll wait a while before I trust this not to totally stuff my system like others have done in the past

Anyone who does go for it! You are very brave!

this thing is the pinnicale of Mac OS X theming, I'm finnaly trusting theming again.

That's why you have a partitioned disk with 2 copies of the OS installed :) just IN CASE there is a problem. I actually have4 separate OS installations over 2 hard drives and 3 partitions... OS 10.3, x 2 , OS 10.2.7 and OS 9.2.2
