I’m seeing something really odd with both my iPhone 12 mini and Apple Watch 8.

It sometimes won’t charge until I restart the device.

Being long time iPhone owner I frequently remove the pocket dust from the port.

And obviously I have tried with multiple chargers and cables. Same result.

I think it started on the watch somewhere along with Watch 10. And I assume that since a reboot solves it, it’s not related to any hardware issue? Has anyone tried something like that? I estimate it happens weekly. It simply won’t detect that I put it on the charger puck.

On my phone I plug it in. It says charging and then it stops again one second later. Sometimes it will start charging again, only to stop again. I restart and then it works and will charge normally for many days. I’m far from the 80% charging limit.

Anyone tried that?

I can ask you a few questions to rule out the problem and determine if it’s a hardware issue or not.
  1. I heard you regularly clean your iPhone’s lightning port but what tool do you use to clean it? Do you also wipe your Apple Watch Series 8 down with a lens cloth even when you change bands and after workouts? Sometimes buildup occurs when you swim, work out or wear your Apple Watch in dirty environment like when you are doing heavy work like machining.
  2. Is this issue usually occurring when you use MagSafe and/or wired cables for your iPhone 12 mini?
  3. Are both devices updated to iOS 18.1 and watchOS 11.1?
•Device Damage Check: Check for cracks, scratches, loose ports, missing pins, or magnetic strength loss for MagSafe and Apple Watch charging.

If these are evident follow the steps below ⬇️

•Professional Repair Recommendation: Get the Apple Watch Series 8 and iPhone 12 checked by a professional technician or Apple Genius at a local Apple Store.
•Genius Bar Appointment Booking: Book an appointment through the Apple support app or getsupport.apple.com. (You only need to book an appointment for either device and you can still get them inspected and repaired by the same geniuses).

It must have been some sort of firmware bug or similar. I have no clue. Since iOS 18.2/watch 11.2 I have not had any issues.

I normally clean out the charging port with a soft plastic or wooden toothpick very gently. Has not caused any issues for over a decade.

Got it. That is 👌🏻 to use a SIM card ejection tool or a plastic toothpick I seen Apple Store geniuses and specialists use the sim ejector to remove dust in the lightning port. Are you running beta or RC?

Nope. Never experimented with beta/RC’s
This has to be an interesting case. Please Test it with third party accessories, wipe down the Apple Watch including the back and ensure that there is no MagSafe accessories on the iPhone 12 mini that is interfering with wireless charging.
