I live in MA and am planning on preordering 3 AT&T iPhones. I've heard that CA and MA sales tax on the iphone is based on the unsubsidized price and is therefore ridiculously huge. Anyone know if I'll save any money preordering from AT&T on this as opposed to Apple? I'm assuming I won't avoid it in stores, given that I'm in MA, and I know I'll take that hit on the apple store. Would prefer to order from the apple store, but if it saves close to $200, ordering from AT&T makes a lot more sense..

Yep, my brother ordered from AT&T and had them shipped to CA and it cost the same. I ordered from Apple and I had to pay the massive tax as well. This time I'm having the phone shipped to my parents house in Pennsylvania and they are going to priority mail it to me. I'll get the phone a couple of days later, but It'll save me about 60 dollars.

How in the world are you saving $200 by paying tax on a $200 device as opposed to a $650 device? The tax rate in MA would have to be like 45%.

Edit: My bad, I can't read. 3 phones.

As I said in my original post, I'm preordering 3 iPhones (two of them 64 GB), so very close to if not more than $200 in sales tax. And if I'm not mistaken--you can't ship them to places other than your billing address, correct? Otherwise I'd have them sent to my daughter at school in CT.

I don't think it's your credit card billing address. I'm pretty sure it's tied to your AT&T billing address. So if you can change your AT&T account billing address temporarily, you can do this online, and then change it back once they ship. I have done that before.

Purchased three iPhone 4's last year. Two in store with about $170 in taxes and the third was online. The online order came out to be $299 - no taxes or upgrade fee whatsoever. Fluke on AT&T's part?
