Unsupported mac upgrade issue

I had mavericks running on my MP but my SSD drive decided to corrupt, I've got the drive working but had to repartition the drive, to cut a long story short I used my gf's MBA to restore to the drive via time machine, only problem is it won't boot from this drive, also I've created a Yosemite install disk via SFOTT but that won't boot either, I've got a ATi 5770 (non apple) so I can't see the boot screen, in the past I've just chosen SFOTT from the start up disk and all is good.

I'm starting to think it's something to do with the boot.efi or something but I'm stuck and it's driving me crazy, any ideas?

Long shot but have you still got the old spinning rust drive that came with the machine?

If not, what about making a bootable USB using the MBA?
