unused Thunderbolt Apple 27" display has SUCK speaker sound

I have a nearly new TB Apple display in the box that I just decided to start using. Hooked up to my MBP.

Music playback through iTunes is alarmingly garbled and bad. Is there a chance that the original speakers are blown or is this a known issue with these TB displays? I have read some weird stuff about them.

Is there a DIY workaround, like a decent set of speakers that I can buy to swap out the TB speakers?

They might be broken, never know. Speakers on my TB Display are really good so yours might have a problem.
