Came across an issue with one of my four AppleTVs (two 4th Gen and two 4K). I tried to rename all of them with the Apple symbol as part of the name, for instance “Garage ︎TV”. No issue on three of them, but on one of the 4Ks, it gives me a message that the “︎“ is an invalid character. Everything is set up the same across all four apart from some video settings, so I’ve no idea why one wants to reject the name change. Any ideas?

Mine gives me this error for about a year now. I was wondering if it may have happened together with AirPlay 2.
I had int named with apple symbol since I bought it, and it carried over all firmware updates. But then one day stupidly started playing with the name and could not use that special character any more. And haven't since.
Error message exactly what you described.
Even Apple Configurator does not do the trick.
