Unwated icons?

When I download some application to my iMac, for example Chrome, an icon resembling a disc drive called "Google Chrome" appears on the desktop. Can I safely delete these icons?

After having installed the application correctly, and then ejecting that disk image (the icon, that looks like a disk drive), you can delete it from your Downloads folder.
