Tight on money and also very clueless about these things. Should I put money to upgrade the HDD or Ram? I understand that the HDD is where I would store my files, music, documents, etc... but what about the RAM? Hopefully someone can shed some light.

RAM is the Random Access Memory, the place where the Operating System (OS) puts the open applications and open documents, so working with those is faster.
The HDD is the Hard Disk Drive, the place where you store all your files.

If you are not using more than five applications at a time, and those are not "heavy" (like 3D, CAD, video editing, photo manipulation, compositing, composing music with more than some tracks), HDD should go before RAM.

Actually, I'm in the process of customizing my online order. Thanks for that bit of helpful info, I think I see what does what now. Probably going to go for the RAM as I tend to run multiple apps at once and don't really need the HDD. I think this is where those thumb drives come in handy. Thanks again!
