Upcoming inevitable 17" Macbook pros -- 4:3 or 16:9 ratio?

I will be upgrading to a 17" MBP because of back and posture concerns (a chiropractor almost paralyzed me, the surgery required vertebrae to be fused so I have trouble in certain positions.)

If the new 17" units are 16:9, that's not going to be much taller than the early 2009 15" model, which means I should just get the current 17" model and lump it.

Is it true the mid-2009 17" has a better screen quality to the early-2009 15"?

I would recommend that you get a laptop stand and a wireless keyboard and mouse. Then, you could choose whichever laptop you desire and don't have to worry about it being too low. I'm not sure about the screen quality differences, but they are both very good from what I've seen and heard.

(The current MacBook Pros are 16:10 not 4:3, so I don't think there would be much difference if they switched to 16:9 anyway.)

I sadly already use a laptop stand and mouse... wired mouse... I can get a good quality Logitech wireless mouse if I had to...

Oops, you're right - the current models are 16:10. But the greater resolution is sweet... Going from 1920:1200 at home to 1440:900 has led to some issues with some design work. (I don't do photo work on TN panels, but I do a lot of page layout, Flash, and other things that I don't require absolute precision for. You really do miss the higher resolution.

I'll double-check re: screen quality. The angle might have been off, which would affect the appearance (it's still a TN panel, with color-shift at some angles... but having put a Macbook Pro next to a windows laptop, the Macbook is still visually more appealing...).

They'll probably be 16:10. Internally, in laptops, space is at a premium. Going to 16:9 would imply a smaller body size as well and I'm not sure that's possible considering what components they're going to want to put in there.

It won't be 4:3, it's almost dead.

If they get 16:9, then 13" would have either 1280x720 (worse than current) or 1366x768 (about the same as current), 15" would get 1600x900 or even 1920x1080 (both would be better than current) and 17" would likely get 1920x1080 unless Apple comes up with new resolution like in 27" iMacs because the next from 1080p would be 2048x1152
