Upcoming technologies

I decided to make a post about upcoming technologies as it might be confusing to some people. I narrowed it down to give information that most people care about, 'when is it released?' and 'whats the fuzz all about?'.


Lets get to work!

Lightpeak
The pitch
Products could come equipped with only a Light Peak port (or ports) to handle your networking, display driving, and general connectivity.

Release window
- Early 2010 (Mass production)
- Fall 2010 (First products shipping)
- 2011 (Rumored low-power variation)

Specs (max)
- 10 Gbps
- 100 meter cables



USB 3
The pitch
A USB 2, but faster!

Release window
- NOW cables are shipping.
- 2009 November, first products are shipping.
- 2009 December, first motherboards with 3.0 ports shipping.

Specs (max)
- 4.8 Gbps
- 5 meter copper wire cables (No news on fiber optic cable lengths)
- Backwards compatible with USB 2 gear.



DDR4 SDRAM
The pitch
Not to be confused with GDDR4. DDR4 will be the successor for todays DDR3 RAM.

Release window
- 2012 (Expected)

Specs (Estimates)
- 1600-3200 Mhz clock speeds.
- Runs at 1.2 V. Expected to drop to 1 V by 2013.
