Hey everyone,

My G5 is still running on mac OS X 10.3.9 and I got a new ipod nano for christmas. I can't use it, because it says I need to update to 10.4.8 or more. I've tried going to apple.com to download updates, but when I try to install it my G5 won't let me....this sucks, do I have to buy the $129.00 version of 10.5.1 or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

10.3.x to 10.4.x is a paid update. You can either buy a copy of Tiger (10.4.x) off of ebay or spend $129 on Leopard (10.5.1) from Apple.

That's really cr*ppy of Apple to require 10.4 or later just to use a new iPod. Sure they want people to update but is there any genuine reason for needing Tiger?

That said - if you can get the cash together for Leopard mysquishymac you'll probably be pleasantly surprised - it's a real step up from Panther.

I wonder what feature was included in 10.4.8 that wasn't in earlier versions that means you'll have to upgrade ?

problems going from 10.3.9 to leopard

hey, i also have a g5 running on 10.3.9 and trying to install a brand new ipod (ipod nano 3rd generation).

A friend gave me a copy of leopard; however, when i tried to install it, a message came up before the installation claiming i needed 10.4something first before I could update to leopard. Am I to understand, that in all of apple's infinite wisdom, the boneheads couldn't foresee someone skipping an update from a perfectly fully functional computer to the newest version? Am i supposed to gone through the bullsh*t of buying/installing 10.4 before I can install 10.5?

I am just angry and pissed at the point. If someone could give me some constructive help at this point, I'd be very appreciative.

You don't have to buy 10.4.8. You can go straight to 10.5.

No matter how out of date you are you can buy only the latest and update directly to it without every looking at what was in between. However, you do have to buy the update and Apple does not provide older operating systems for free or reduced cost so if you don't want to update to the latest you have to ebay an older version.
