How would i do this guys? I have my iPhone 4 coming, and i have a sneaky feeling it might be on 4.0, so i want to update it to 4.0.1 rather than itunes pushing me to update to 4.0.2. Thanks

You will not be able to go to 4.0.1.
Just stay with 4.0, no difference other than signal bar display.

If you try and upgrade, you will end up at 4.0.2 with no jailbreak.

Can't be done. You need SHSH blobs for any firmware you want to install that is not the firmware currently being signed by Apple, which will be 4.0.2 in a few hours. Your only option would be to stay on 4.0 and jailbreak and hope you don't need to restore your phone

Oh okay, so the only difference is the way the signal is displayed? And there is no way i can get to 4.0.1 from 4.0 now that 4.0.2 is out? Thanks

Should i backup my SHSH blobs just in case? Will that mean if for some reason i have to go to 4.0.2 by accident or otherwise i will be able to roll back to 4.0? Thanks

No way to go to 4.0, you can only save 4.0.2 hashes now.

You should always use TinyUmbrella or Cydia to start saving hashes. One never knows what horrors Apple will drop on us next.

No if you need to restore you can't install 4.0 again. Like I said you need SHSH blobs and you won't have them for 4.0. When you get your phone you can get the SHSH's for 4.0.2

Everyone should save their SHSH's, but from here on out you will only get 4.0.2 (4.0.1 if you are lucky, but doubtful) and upwards.
You will never be able to roll back to 4.0.

I see, thankyou for your input guys, i hope my phone comes with 4.0.1 or 4.0 and i shall have to careful not to let iTunes update it!

Say for arguments sake, i was on 4.0.1 and backed up my SHSH blobs before 4.0.2 was released, and updated to 4.0.2 i would still be able to roll back to 4.0.1 yes?

Yes. Apple only signs the current firmware (apart from a small crossover period).
