All iPads Update iOS on iPad intended for gift

Before I open a sealed iPad I pruchased for my parent I want to confirm that iOS can be updated to the most current without using an Apple ID?

I'd like to save time come Christmastime in the event that the iPad (an Air 1) is still on iOS 7.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Why not put yours on and then wipe it ?

Got ya... Kind of treat it as if I were selling it and do a full wipe. The wipe will keep the most recent iOS version, right?
