My iPhone 3G (I know, I know - I should upgrade...) is currently running iOS 3.1.3. My 7-year old daughter is dying for me to get Angry Birds, but it only runs on 4.0 or higher. I'm aware that 4.0 killed most 3G phones, but that Apple also updated 4.0 to address this issue. Should I upgrade? Will I notice a difference in speed? It's kinda slow already, but I'm obviously used to it...

Thanks for any advice.

I haven't heard any complaints since the update. I think with the 3G you can downgrade if you have problems? If you van downgrade it's always worth a try.

Still chugging along with my 3G also.

Basically, from my experience:

4.0 was awful, and prompted all the complaints.
4.1 was an improvement, but performance still wasn't all that.
4.2.1 is much smoother than either previous update.

I still encounter a bit of slowness with 4.2.1 from time to time, but I don't remember 3.1.x being amazingly snappy either (it came with that, so I have no experience of 2.x or 3.0).

With regard to Angry Birds, I find it generally ok to play, but expect a little bit of graphics lag from time to time; nothing serious though and still very much playable.

Thanks for the positive comments. It's nice to know I'm not the only one still "crazy" enough to be using a 3G! :)

I'm still in contract for a few months with mine. People around here seem to forget that Apple only withdrew it in June 2010.

I find angry birds lags a bit on my 3GS, so I would imagine it would be worse on the 3G, but it may be good enough for you...

Angry Birds was nearly unplayable on my 3G running 4.1. I've since convinced my secretary to trade me for his old 3GS.

I posted this before in a similar thread:

I'm also using my iPhone 3G on iOS 3.1.3, which i got on the first day it came out back in '08. I've upgraded to iOS 4.2.1, and it's still very slow compared to iOS 3.1.3.
If these apps are completely necessary then might as well buy an iPhone 4, because it takes forever for the apps to load and work on iOS 4.2.1. Trust me, i switched and switched back from iOS 4.2.1 about 3 times since it was released. I've decided to stick with iOS 3.1.3, i think it's the most ideal firmware for the iPhone 3G. Apple really dropped the ball there, iOS 4 should have never been available for iPhone 3G users.

I too have apps which don't support iOS 3 anymore, and for now i'm just waiting for iPhone 5 and iOS 5 so i can make a clean upgrade.

Regardless, you can always try iOS 4.2.1, and downgrade by using Tinyumbrella to get you out of DFU mode. (there are videos on youtube with, from easy searches). And you'll be back at iOS 3.1.3, just make sure you back all your important files up if you decide to upgrade.
