Sorry if this has been asked before, just need to graspthe concept of updating jailbroken iphone:

1. Is it necessary to restore to factory settings before updating via itunes (and thus erasing all data) or can I just update on top of the jailbroken firmware (so I don't need to sync music etc all over again - but just loosing the jailbreak dependent apps)

2. It's possible to back up jailbreak dependent apps/settings and reinstall on newer firmware once this is jailbroken, right?

So i guess it goes like this

1. Backup official app/settings, music etc in itunes
2. Backup jailbreak dependent apps/settings (with some program, can't remember the name)
3. Restore Iphone (if necessary)
4. Update iphone
5. Sync content with itunes
6. Jailbreak updated ios (when released)
7. Reinstall jailbreak dependent apps

Or what? Easier methods?

Thanks!

Restoring or updating an iPhone 4 via iTunes both do the same thing: You end up with a stock iPhone on stock firmware, no difference except for firmware version.

You can then jailbreak (if a JB is available for the firmware you are on) and unlock. Then sync back your music, movies, contacts, etc

Just remember, to go backwards (restore) with firmware on iPhone 4 requires saved hashes.
