Hey you might remember me from a month or so back asking some questions about my newly picked up Mini G4. Good news after sometime I finally ruled out The drive being savable and ordered a new one! Good news is a one prying open later and we are golden. First off thanks to everybody here for the help, special thanks to r6mile for kindly sending me a 1GB stick of RAM I could use only for the cost of postage.
Anyway the main deal the drive, I tried to clean it out with compressed air and so on but it would just reject discs constantly. So I did some more digging around, I wanted a new drive, well a drive that had yet to be used and I found one of all places on Amazon and I'm glad to report it works flawlessly, below I will throw some pictures of me doing the swap. I will note if you one of these as a replacement for a Mini, iMac, Powerbook etc, mine came with a front plate, this is very easily removed however and then it fits in the Mini nicley.
Overall that's it, my mini is fixed and fully upgraded for around £40ish in total, I'm not gonna go as far as an SSD I have some external storage I can use. Another fun fact I found while working on it is that the piror owner has swapped out the HDD sometime, the WD drive inside had a manufacture date of 2010 so that's cool, also explains why I was shocked at it keeping time, clock battery also must of been replaced too.
Anyway that's it now for my Mini, I finally have some sort of PPC system besides my Nintendo's. Next thing to do, install Mac OS 9!
