Update my imac 10.5.8 to ML

Hello everyone,
Whats the best way to update my imac 9,1 (core 2 Duo) from 10.5.8 to ML. I am stuck between doing a back up and using an ML usb or finding a free OSX 10.6 and then updating to that to get the app store app then I can purchase ML through that.
Any suggestions on the best and cheapest way to shift from 10.5.8 to ML?
