Hey everyone i am not sure if i should update my iphone 5 to the latest ios? I have heard people saying it slows down your phone? What are the drawbacks of updating to the latest ios? Would i be able to use a third party charger?

If it's certified yeah. I think you need to check the package or ask the seller before buying.
I would say yes upgrade. Apple chargers are cheap enough why use a third party one given the value of the phone ?
I've been on iOS7 since day 1 on my 4S and it's been great. You may wish to turn off some of the features, like animation and background app updates, but you can research the various threads here on the reasons for doing so or not.

You should consider selling your iPhone 5 with 6.1.4 on it.
There are some disturbed people out there who are obsessively fighting progress and sticking with iOS 6. These people, especially ones who upgraded to 7 by mistake, will likely pay good money for an un-upgraded iPhone 5, since there's no way to go back once you upgrade to iOS 7.
Take advantage of their desperation and make a few bucks!

Stick with genuine chargers. C'mon, they're not that expensive.

I got a replacement iphone 5 with 6.1.4 on it and am debating about whether to:
1. upgrade to ios 7 so I can use my previous backup
2. keep 6.1 and manually rebuild everything or
3. sell
I tried searching ebay to see what brand new (or unused refurbished) iphone 5s with ios 6 are selling for, but I wasn't able to find what I was looking for. Anyone know what they are worth on ebay to an ios 7 luddite?
PS - I'd forgotten how pretty the icons used to be.
