Update notifications for OS X

I've set system preferences on my Tiger 10.4.11 to check for updates once a month. A window would automatically open with updates available for downloading. But for the last three months, including yesterday, the update check has missed its "due date." I have to check manually now for updates, even though the system preferences is still set for monthly update checks. What gives, is the thing broken?
