can my friend update to 3.0 on my computer? her computer is not working, but she wants to update.

and she wont lose any data?
As long as you go into iTunes first and uncheck any of the "Sync" features and the backup option.

The way iTunes works is to sync the iPhone based on the Computer, so be default it will take the information from the computer and try to put all the music, contacts and data onto the iPhone.

Your best bet would be to setup a new userid on your computer and the make sure that iTunes is not set to allow any action but the prompt for "Update".

The iPhone will not auto-sync if it's plugged into a computer it's never been plugged in before. It will ask. You don't have to worry about setting up a new user ID or anything like that.

Besides, you can't change the iPhone sync preferences unless the iPhone is plugged into it in the first place.
