Update os x

Hello.
never owned a mac before. just getting one this monday.
So when i get it. how am i suppose to update the os? is it automatic? will everything download by itself? or am i suppose to go to apple website and download everything manually? how do i go that??

in System Preferences —» System —» software update you can choose how often to check for updates It always asks you if you want to install them now or later. Everything else is automatic
