Should i update my iPhone to 4.2.1 through iTunes first before i use the JB or is there some other method?

Will i loose my cydia apps etc if i update?

I did this on my friend's iPad.

Back up in iTunes
3.2 > 4.2.1 using iTunes

Jailbreak using greenpois0n
Install Cydia using redsn0w

All the cydia apps were gone, so I recommended using AptBackup or similar. However, going from iOS 3 to 4, many of the Cydia apps were no longer needed. Such as backgrounder.
 
You need to list your iphone, iOS, previous jb used and if you have blobs.
