update unlocked iphone 3.0 to newest

can anyone tell me how to update my unlocked 3.0 iphone to the newest 4.1( i think?) i have been watching tutorials on you tube and they say to use red snow but when i go to open the links it says they no longer work? I also have a old mac power book G4 if thats important (OS 10.58).I'm desperate to download some apps on my phone but my old 3.0 says its just too old.
please help..step by step. thank you!!!!

If you are unlocked on ATT with a GSM phone then you can update through iTunes to the newest software.

ya i wish! thats the easy part no I live in china i just know it will relock if i sync it/ upgrade to the newest. can i unlock again afterwards and how if so? thanks!
