Eve Systems today announced the launch of a second-generation version of its Eve Motion sensor, which is designed to detect motion to activate other HomeKit-enabled devices.

eve-motion-sensor.jpg

The updated version of the Eve Motion includes an integrated light sensor and support for the Thread mesh networking standard that is designed to improve the connectivity and interoperability of smart home devices.

Eve Motion is equipped with replaceable AAA batteries and can be placed anywhere inside or outside the home to be used alongside HomeKit products. According to Eve Systems, the new Eve Motion has been designed with a more compact body and IPX3 water resistance so it can stand up to splashes of water and rain.

A 120-degree field of view detects motion within a nine meter range, and with the new light sensor, the Eve Motion can detect motion and changes in lighting to activate HomeKit devices. It can, for example, turn on the lights in a room when a person enters, plus it pairs with the Eve MotionBlinds to raise or lower the blinds based on the ambient lighting in the room.

All of Eve's Thread devices, the Eve Motion included, will be able to receive an over-the-air firmware update that will allow them to work with upcoming smart home protocol Matter, which will be supported by Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung, and more. Matter is set to launch later this year.

The second-generation Eve Motion is priced at $40 and it can be purchased from the Eve website starting today.

Good to see more devices getting thread. Though my $20 bluetooth motion sensor works just fine and includes a temperature and humidity sensor (I don't know how accurate it actually is but whatever).

Would've been nice to see Eve add some more of these sensors into it but could be solid as long as it's reliable. Might get it if it goes on sale in a few months

Why buy this over the Hue motion sensor? In fact, why buy any of the Eve products? I used to have the weather sensor. That died three times until they refused to replace it any longer (about 8-9 months each time).

I also own 3 Eve Energy plugs. They constantly disconnect and are hideously unreliable with automations. Only last week, last week we found out our electric water heater had been on solid for 2 weeks (costing us a small fortune) as a result of this failure. The fix? Having to unplug the Eve Energy for a period of time and then reprogram it again.

We also own an Eve door sensor (which drained its Lithium battery so fast that we ended up ditching it), and an Eve Extend as the Bluetooth range was so poor.

All the above is now slowly getting boxed up and replaced with Hue plugs (I don't care anymore if I can't measure the electric usage), and the door sensors were replaced when I installed my Ring Alarm and combined it with HomeBridge.

Oh, and the weather station was replaced with a Netatmo Weather station which gives me way more information and for the initial kit, cost exactly the same in the Prime sales.

Eve = Junk.

Only about 6 years late to the party. I suppose if you have bought into the cheaper stuff like Eve it might be something you have been waiting for but the rest of us having been using the Hue one's for years.

We have owned Philips Hue since day one and it works flawlessly for us, everything responds as it should and not a single bulb has died in that time.

What is the latency, I wonder? How quickly can other devices respond?
Exactly. The most important issue.

I have the BT version and I’m already out of the room again when the hue lights turn via HomeKit.

Late to what party? Hue is on Zigbee while this new Eve sensor is on thread.

They use two different standards…

Thread is superior in every category as well as being backed by the Matter application layer which is fully integrated with iOS and Android.

The Apple TV is already a bridge border router for thread accessories, which means no hub required.

Here are a few key points for the unfamiliar:

  • much lower latency (often half of Zigbee's);
  • Thread seems to send the commands in the first packet, not wait for back-and-forth connection establishing.
  • much better performance in the mesh network - especially over multiple hops
  • no need for a hub - all IP based, directly addressable without "translations" by a hub to the rest of the network
  • as redundant and safe as the internet, using proven IP technologies
  • open and royalty-free standard (openthread implementation on github)
  • built specifically for the smart home - with easier device commissioning (e.g. via smartphone / QR code)

All of those accessories you mentioned are Bluetooth enabled.
This article is about the new thread enabled motion sensor.

It’s a completely different user experience.
If you get the chance to get a good deal on thread enabled Eve products, give them another try.

Looks like a carbon copy of the Philips HUE motion sensor…

It does. So much that I came here to say: the first gen already had a light sensor. But that was Hue.

I've been waiting for Eve to come out with a Thread enabled sensor. I have the Hue in my bathroom but guests regularly ask me why I have a camera in the bathroom. Now Eve has the same camera looking black dot.

I’m inclined to agree. While I haven’t had any issues with my Eve Energy plugs yet, my Eve Camera is complete garbage. I always assumed it was HKSV’s fault, but the more I use it, the less I think that.

I do think Thread/Matter support is important so I hope other companies adopt it and I’m not stuck with Eve only.

Despite the mixed amazon reviews I've had no issues with my Eve outdoor cameras and HKSV ( albeit my only Eve devices thus far). I even replaced all of my floodlights with them I was that confident. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another Eve product assuming it has thread/matter support.

I like the Eve app but I do wish they'd these cameras would update their firmware over the air.

Over the air firmware updates (Logitech Circle + others, Eve Thread) > In-app firmware Updates (Meross, Eve, Nanoleaf) > In-app Firmware Updates that phone home to China (Aqara)

I'm ambivalent. On the one hand, I was a little disappointed with the Eve Weather station's poor display and that I already had to change its battery after only 6 months. On the other hand, my Eve Motion (old version) and my most recent purchases, the Thread-supporting Eve Room and Eve Energy, have been rock solid. So much so, that I will probably buy a couple of these new Eve motion detectors.

Two of the Eve energy plugs are on thread. The Eve Extend is on Thread. I'm sorry, but while I accept Thread should be superior, Eve has executed it badly, and their customer support team are absolutely terrible. Rude, obnoxious and without any empathy at all when the products break.

I don't know about the US, but in the EU, products must be fit for purpose for 2 years. The manufacturer hasn't got a leg to stand on if their product breaks. They must repair or replace it. Eve constantly tries to fight this and lie their backsides off claiming only a one-year warranty. These are pure lies. It's 2 years in Europe and 6 in the UK.

I wouldn't touch Eve products again with a barge pole, especially having spent so much on them in the past.

My Hue products have been flawless since day dot, and the one bulb that died was replaced without question 3 years after it popped. Added to that, the range is phenomenal. I own two properties and one has a very large garden. The Hue lights work across the entire property without any issues, both inside and out. Aside from the fact that Eve doesn't have the same products as Hue, their motion sensors work flawlessly, wind, rain or shine. They all have temperature sensors which are accurate and using HomeBridge, you can log the results as you would do with Eve Weather.

The sockets are reliable and just, work. They work with automations both on the Hue platform and on HomeBridge and the latency on the sensors is about half a second...if that. (I use them across my property for the outdoor floodsides and terrace lights).

In short, there are much better solutions to Eve.

I wonder if @drlamb works for Eve.... 😅
Nope, I just don't see how a device (hue XYZ) that requires a hub/app/third party configuration (home assistant/bridge) is comparable to a native/no-hub homekit device.

I'm not opposed to HA/HB but I'm willing to pay for native support and I've yet to find a device worthy of firing up HA/HB for. I've also yet to need a hub for ANY of my smart home devices and I'd like to keep it that way.
