Updated old iPhone, now says no sim card.

I use my old iPhone with its old sim card as an iPod effectively.

Just updated it to the new software, and now itunes says there is no card in the phone whatsoever.

What do I do?

was it an unlocked first gen iphone? or a jailbroken 3g?
