My phone wants me to update Pages and Numbers, but it's a big update so I have to connect to iTunes. However iTunes claims the apps are up to date and are synced to the phone.

I don't have wifi to do it on the phone. What gives?

Somehow right after posting this, I checked for updates on iTunes for the 10th time and now it seems to have recognized it has updates. What a confusing mess.

There was some major mess up with itunes and updates today. I had sixteen updates magically disappear and reappear.

Checked with Apple- they knew nothing.

Sometimes it takes different devices some time to recognise that there are updates available, happened to me for iOS OTA software update as well, one phone could detect it while the other phone couldn't.

Still not sure why this kind of things happen though. No explanation for it on my side.
