Updating 3gs from 4.0 to ????

I have 3 iphones, all 3 are 3gs.

3gs FW 4.0 (NOT 4.0.1) bb 05.13.04 bl 6.4 model MC640
bootrom 359.3.2 (unfortunately)
JB jailbreakme
UL ultrasn0w

3gs FW 4.0.1 bb 05.13.04 bl 6.4 model MC136
bootrom 359.3.2 (unfortunately)
JB jailbreakme
UL ultrasn0w

3gs FW 4.0.1 bb 05.13.04 bl 6.4 model MC133

I have tried updating to 4.3.3 doing the following:
pwnage tool to create custom ipsw. Enter DFU, hold option, click restore, select custom ipsw, Extracting, verifying with apple.... then I get this message... "this device isnt eligible for the requested build"

I have tried editing the hosts file, to no avail.

My question is this. I want to upgrade all 3 phones to the most recent FW that is UNTETHERED JB, and must be unlockable as I use T-mobile. What FW do I use, and what steps do I need to take. I have updated, JB, and unlocked phones before, but never had the message stated above.

My eyes are crossed from reading and searching, so I really need some help on this one.

I use a MAC OS X 10.6.8

Do you have shsh blobs save for these phones? If not, you can't go to 4.3.3 which has untethered jailbreak. you can only go to 5.0.1 which apple is currently signing. However, it is tethered jailbreak as well as ultrasnow has not been updated to work with it.
 
OK, 2 of them (the ones with 4.0.1) have all the shsh from 4.0-5.1bl saved in tinyumbrella.

The other phone (the one with 4.0) has only shsh 4.1, 5.0.1 and 5.1bl

You can use sn0wbreeze or Pwnage tool to build 4.3.3 customs firmware for the ones you have blobs for and update them to that firmware and you will have untethered jailbreak. You can use jailbreakme.com on the 4.3.3 as well.

So the other one running 4.0, I can only update to 4.1 doing the same thing correct?

Again, you need to cook a customs 4.1 firmware. If you use the official 4.1, its baseband will also upgrade to 05.14 and therefore, it can't be unlocked with ultrasn0w.
 
OK, so I tried to restore to 4.3.3 using custom FW created with Pwnage tool 4.3.3, I had TinyUmbrella running the TSS server, as it started to install the FW, I got a Error 1600 message, The iPhone could not be restored. I put the phone into DFU mode before I started the restore.
