Updating a jailbroken 3gs iPhone????

I was just wondering if i update the firmware on an iphone through itunes and it is jailbroken what will happen? Will the phone lock itself permanently and i wont be able to use it?

Unlocked or just jb?
It will go back to stock firmware that's all.
No jb or unlock will survive an official update.

its unlocked and jailbroken. so does that mean i shouldn't do it?

im buying a secondhand one and i don't mind if when i update it becomes un-jailbroken and loses the apps but will it stop working completely or just what will happen?

Dont do it, judging by what you're asking you will have a really hard time dealing with SHSH's (if you have them saved on cydia) and doing it right so you dont get locked out. What firmware are you on now and why you want to update?
If you update to 4.1 you will lose your JB and unlock. And wont be able to even use it as an ipod touch unless you activate it with an official sim.

ok i don't understand what SHS's even are so i won't try - i don't know what firmware is on there but im guessing its not the latest im buying it off ebay and the seller told me not to update it when i first connect to itunes because it will 'lock the phone'.
is there a lot of difference between the versions of firmware?

Yes, many different versions of firmware, basebands etc...
You got tons of stuff to learn before attempting anything on it.
