I'm assuming that this is possible, but probably only if I convert it to Mac format first?

When I plug it in to the iMac its recognised and an iPod removable disk appears on the desktop and when I load up iTunes it asks if I want to update the firmware to 2.1. If I say Yes it brings up another window and then milliseconds after the window saying Update and Restore appears on screen the iPod disappears from the desktop and a final window appears saying that I have to mount the iPod before I can update the firmware.

If I say I do not want to update the firmware when I load iTunes I can access the iPod within iTunes fine and play songs through the iMac from the iPod. But I can't do this if I try to update the firmware.

Is there anyway I can do this (update the firmware) without having to restore the iPod? It also has some files from my Windows Laptop on it. If I can succesfully update the firmware will I still be able to access these files from my Laptop PC? (which runs Windows ME, hence why I want to update the firmware using the iMac; as the 2.1 doesn't support Windows ME) It doesn't bother me too much if I can't transfer songs from the Laptop to the iPod as I am happy using the iMac to do that, but still being able to use the iPod as a firewire hard disk is a must.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
